Fashion is an expression of oneself through style and clothing. It is an art form that lives for creativity and breathes audaciousness. And while we here at FRESHLY.EDUCATED.MEN believe that men should be fearless when it comes down to their style, we must admit, there are some…misjudgments in fashion that most men make. So we will put the spotlight on these “Style Blunders” and provide the remedy for each one.
We spotlight…well, the picture speaks for itself.
blunder
Where to start with this one? It still ceases to amaze us when we notice some men proudly showcasing this look. We are often times quite blindsided (and perplexed) by this whole visual confusion. Granted, it’s one thing that you’re channeling the late great Michael Jackson on Halloween with this combination. It’s another when men put this together…on a regular basis and pair their black dress shoes and suit with white sports sock. There’s really no logic behind it. For one, it not only completely ruins your suit’s look, white socks against black shoes are noticeable. So it’s not like you can get away with it and hope to God that no one noticed. Trust us on this one: we all noticed, including the legally blind 98-year old from the moving bus. Secondly, it just doesn’t flow…period. There’s no other way we can explain it. And lastly, if you’re not Michael Jackson (or his reincarnated spirit)…this combination can just “Beat It”.
remedy
The easiest and most straight-forward rule to remember: choose dark socks that match your pants. So a black suit and black shoes: black socks. A grey suit and black shoes: dark grey socks. A navy blue suit and brown shoes: navy blue socks. It’s such a simple concept. Now, for our more creative and daring individuals…add a pop of colour to your look. A slight glimpse of something out-of-the-ordinary under a pants cuff can be alluring. For example, instead of sporting the traditional navy blue sock with your navy suit, try a pair of red wool socks (for the ensuing winter season). You’d be surprised at what a slight hint of colour can do to your entire look. Also, patterns can add a sense of confidence to the right suit. They can be unique, sexy, and attention getting…especially with tweed or houndstooth coats. But just ensure that you’re pairing patterned socks with simple suits (un-patterned). The last thing a man needs is a kaleidoscope of argyles and plaids…all below the waist.
