A picture says 1000 words. In this age of hustle and bustle, we tend to forget that our city has amazing visuals that tell our story. We may pass by an intersection, a road, a building, a person, a shop many times without appreciating its beauty. Every week we want to give you a unique perspective from a local Toronto photographer through their eyes.
There seems to be an emerging trend of sorts in the fashion industry. Up until recently, we have been able to consume this world through runways from the many Fashion Weeks and still shots from look books that are produced for each collection. But we are now seeing a restless movement that yearns for a something, well, more innovative. Sure, still shot photos are great as we get to simply visualize the look, but we are talking about fashion after all. In the real world, clothing moves as does our bodies that wear them. So it comes as no surprise that a small group of style aficionados are paving the way for a new method of conceptualizing how we view menswear. Through his honed craft, Toronto-born video journalist Justin Wu is among this group of pioneers.
Utilizing some of the most avant-garde pieces from this SS2010 season, Justin has produced a video look book that not only lets us visualize the various looks, but also breathes life into each piece through movement.
“It’s a new test that I think will be a game changer in the industry. Besides photo books for models, I’m now following a very small trend in using video.” Justin Wu
We must say, this is the future of fashion! And if you are wondering, the fresh-faced model that is utilized in the video look book is none other than new-comer Loammi Goetghebeur. This 19-year old Belgian has already graced the catwalks of Milan and London Fashion Weeks, and will surely be a staple in all the major menswear shows.

Much like any accessory, sunglasses can make or break an outfit. Sure, one may don the most exquisite outfit with all the whistles and trimmings it may come with, but pair it with outrageous spectacles and one has a disaster waiting to happen. But luckily for mankind, Robert Geller – the American saviour of menswear this SS2010 – has unleashed his new line of eye wear that not only oozes a sense of panache, but maintains a timeless feel to the collection of optical-wear. Crafted in Japan from premium acetate, the Davidis undoubtedly rooted from classic wayfarer styles. Its simple shape and polished lines are the raison d’être for our immense infatuation with this piece. And lest not forget, the rich tortoiseshell frame instantly deems the bearer of such a lovely creation to be sophisticated, yet ever so cool. Like we said, sunglasses can make or break an outfit. And in this case, one can simply be wearing a simple white tee shirt and ripped jeans with the David yet still look effortlessly chic.

Fashion is an art form that lives and breathes for innovation and ingenuity. And in this ever changing industry, there are new leaders of fashion everyday that manage to revolutionize this art form and leave us in awe. It was the late and great Coco Chanel – the Parisian purveyor of elegance – that perhaps best described these revolutionary designers with the simple declaration that: “Those who create are rare; those who cannot are numerous. Therefore, the latter are stronger.” So, in the true spirit of continually looking forward, the Ryerson School of Fashion produced their fashion show during LG Toronto Fashion Week featuring select collections from graduates of the program.
This year saw four immensely talented emerging designers that, we dare say, could rival some of the already more established designers at Fashion Week. But it was menswear designer Freda Audrey Tam that made the largest impression. Sure, it may be due in part to the fact that it was menswear, but it was really the impeccable tailoring in each piece that blew us away. So we take solace in knowing that the future of Canadian menswear will be safe, thanks to the brilliance that is Freda Audrey Tam…
