Not too long ago I had the distinct pleasure to meet with a young Toronto visionary Joel Yum, who among being a passionate photographer and student is the brain child behind The Image Interview. This grassroots movement peaked my interest as it aims to do something very similar to my own “Home Grown Talent” section. It aims to promote local talent by giving them a platform with which to promote their work. Unlike my blog which takes a traditional interview approach, Joel has developed what I believe to be a uniquely brilliant approach that breaks through the clutter of conventional interviews. As the name of his site would suggest, his approach employs his love of photography through which he quite literally transforms his interviews into a true expression of art. The Image Interview aims to highlight people from all artistic disciplines (photography, dance, design, music…) through a series of still images and hand written notes. There is something so organic about this approach that I dare admit that sometimes a simple on camera interview just doesn’t compare. In a world where everything is digital and perfect The Image Interview invites us into the unaltered world of its subjects and for a brief moment enables us to walk in their shoes. I hope that all of you will take a moment to check out The Image Interview and get better acquainted with Joel’s work and the immense talent this city has to offer.
