october 19 2009 – october 24 2009

October 19 2009 marks the official launch of North America’s second largest Fashion Week.  LG Fashion Week (headed up by The Fashion Design Council of Canada) has evolved from its small beginnings 11 years ago, to now a bi-annual fashion gathering that commands international respect, economic trade, and profile of our fashion industry and designers.  It is one that has launched many a career for home grown designers, and one that strives to continue to showcase Toronto’s creative innovation and its’ unique chicness to the world.  Fashion Week will also be home to some of our city’s fashion mavens as they gather to engross themselves in the world that births ingenuity and audacity.

As such, we here at FRESHLY.EDUCATED.MEN are primed to provide you with an in-depth and unique coverage of all the menswear collections (and everything in between) during LG Fashion Week.  Now, having said that, we are inclined to state our thoughts on this week’s upcoming menswear presence.  Despite the fact that this week is aimed to showcase our fashion industry as a collective, as we have stated this many times…out of the 34 (approximately) collections scheduled to be shown this week, only 3 are purely dedicated to menswear.  We find that to be discouraging, to say the least.

19Now, we want to point out that undoubtedly, womenswear is an integral part of the fashion industry as a whole.  However, we feel (and know in our hearts) that menswear is just as important as its counterpart.  To put this matter in perspective, at least half of the world’s population is male.  So why is it that the second largest Fashion Week in North America, is set to showcase only 3 all-menswear collections?  Granted, there are 4 other collections that will include menswear during LG Fashion Week…we’d just envisaged a more aggressive approach towards showcasing our city’s top menswear collections.  Take a look at the previous Fashion Week that precedes Toronto’s (New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week): at least half of their collections were solely dedicated to menswear.  If our goal, as the capital of the Canadian fashion industry, is to stay competitive with the other fashion-forward cities of the world, and not to mention showcase to the global audience all of our talents, our roster of collections need to be reflective of both womenswear and menswear.

So, with that in mind, during LG Fashion Week, we will be at all the menswear shows and plan to bring you coverage of them all.  We will also be providing the male perspective of Fashion Week (everything from the shows, galas to the attendees) and most importantly, all of our observations…FRESHLY.EDUCATED.MEN style.  So, get ready as our mission is to document LG Fashion Week so that the ones that couldn’t attend…well, hopefully will feel like they did.

Check back often this week as FRESHLY.EDUCATED.MEN narrates “Wear Love, Spring 2010 Collections”.
