A week ago, we went into LG Toronto Fashion Week with a single mission: to document the male perspective, and attempt to break the rigid stereotype that menswear is just an afterthought during Fashion Week. So for 5 days, as Toronto showcased Canada’s most prolific designers and their respective collections, we set out on a journey that dared to give voice to men in Toronto. And along this journey, we discovered that, although not represented as much as their counterpart, men in Toronto are extremely passionate about fashion and their appearances. Perhaps, we dare say, more so than women.
streets is talking.
We return with a special edition of Streets is Talking. During LG Toronto Fashion Week, while there seemed to be a void in presenting menswear collections, Toronto men came, saw and conquered Fashion Week with their outfits. At times, even the women were jealous of the overwhelming showing of men and their styles. As always, the series looks at an array of different people and styles to show that a white-T and jeans isn’t the only look out there. You may not agree with all the fashions we post but try and keep an open mind, who knows, you may find yourself breaking out and developing your own “unique” style.
It’s not often that one sees the other side of the runway during any Fashion Week. It is often a chaotic world of beautifying models, and touching up (or in this case, repairing a shoe or two) that most people don’t realize happens behind the scenes. So while the rest of attendees sat and saw the part of the show organizers want to be shown, we went back stage to witness first hand what is really involved to produce a fashion show. Nestled behind the glamourous runway is a tunnel that curves through the “tent”. And at the end of this tunnel is a world of make-up, hair and pure pandemonium. From organizers scurrying around and dictating orders to their minions, to hair spray being used like it was a hair show, this is the other side of the runway.
In its 4th day, LG Toronto Fashion Week has given us both the unexpected and entertainment. While it was relatively quiet on the menswear department (save the Rudsak show), we had the pleasure of speaking to the team behind Gotstyle The Menswear Store, while they were in the midst of prepping for their show. We also got an exclusive peak into what’s in store for Friday’s presentation. And let’s just say that men will be thoroughly represented during their show.
While it was quiet in the menswear front on Day 3 of LG Toronto Fashion Week (with only Joe Fresh Style presenting menswear in their collection), it seemed somewhat less frantic than the previous day. But appearances are deceiving. On the inside, it was the same scurrying around, fashion mavens posing and celebrities being harassed by the media. On a day that saw rain, Toronto fashion mavens couldn’t be held back from their kryptonite because of some drizzle.
