Jimmy Choo for H&M
For over 60 years, the 66th most recognized brand in the world, Hennes & Mauritz (commonalty known as H&M) has provided fashion mavens the world over with chic and luxury, “at the best price”. Currently with over 1800 stores in 34 different countries, H&M has redefined a whole generation of consumers with the simple notion of affordable style. And while consumers are still purchasing luxury items at high price points, H&M has been the catalyst for the mixture of higher and lower price point items ideology.
In November of 2004, H&M altered the fashion industry and released its exclusive collection by the legendary Karl Lagerfeld. The days of inaccessibility for many to the luxury world were over as the H&M x Karl Lagerfeld collection offered the world a piece of the Karl Lagerfeld designs, at a fraction of the price. The press reported large crowds and that initial inventories were sold out within an hour. It was a huge success and H&M continued its collaborations with some of the world’s most innovative designers: Stella McCartney in 2005, Viktor & Rolf in 2006, Roberto Cavalli in 2007 and Comme des Garçons in 2008.
In keeping tradition with its vision of offering accessible luxury to all, H&M is set to release its highly coveted collection on November 14 2009, with none other than the glamourous, Jimmy Choo.

Nostalgia & Inspired by Fashion
We must admit, we love to go out and have a good time. It’s a mixture of the caliber of people at the event, the vibe throughout the entire night, and of course, the music that make going out so enjoyable. And while there is a deluge of functions and parties every weekend in our great city, only a handful of them are worth attending. So it is with great joy that this weekend will play host to 2 of those “handful of events” that are worth attending. From the team behind one of Toronto’s most grandiose series of events, Inspired by Fashion is dedicated purely to one’s perception of style and expression. Perhaps an event after our own heart? And last, but certainly not least, continuing on with their legacy of taking Toronto on a cosmic musical journey, Nostalgia is poised to bring us back to the ’90s…when music was at its peak and when it was good.
H1N1 Flu Vaccine: Risk or Responsibility?
Every year public health officials urge Canadians to inoculate themselves with a shot of the flu vaccine that guards against seasonal flu. But while there have been minor debates over the course of many flu seasons whether or not the seasonal flu vaccine is effective, this year is different. With the introduction of a new strain of influenzavirus A (Pandemic H1N1/09 virus, and commonly known as “Swine Flu”) that has rapidly spread throughout the world, health officials worldwide (and here at home) have been concerned because the virus is new and could easily mutate and become more virulent.
It was on October 26 2009 that 13-year old Evan Frustaglio, a healthy boy who played in a minor hockey league, died of the H1N1 virus at St. Joseph’s hospital. Evan Frustaglio’s fatal complications from the H1N1 virus, along with the death of a two-month old London Ontario baby on November 2 2009, have both shocked and unnerved Torontonians about the H1N1 flu virus. And while scientists have produced a specific vaccine that guards against this new H1N1 flu virus called Arepanrix, and vaccinations have already begun for “priority groups” in Toronto, there continues to be a heated debate whether or not the H1N1 flu virus should be treated as a pandemic, and more importantly, whether or not Arepanrix is safe to use.
Some argue that while this is a new flu virus, there is no need to create mass hysteria over the H1N1 flu virus, as they argue that the regular seasonal flu virus is just as severe…if not more. They also argue that because officials were so eager in obtaining a “swine flu” vaccine in the early part of 2009, they rushed production of it and thus raising the question whether or not Arepanrix is even safe for humans, and more importantly, what are the vaccine’s side effects? But while there are many who doubt this vaccine and its prevention of the H1N1 flu virus, many others (public health officials and government health bodies being among them) vehemently argue that because this is indeed a new flu virus, the only reliable way of controlling the spread, especially to those who are susceptible to the virus’ most severe effects, is to vaccinate. They declare that it is the responsibility of all citizens to guard themselves against this new flu virus. They also argue that Arepanrix has been tested and declared safe for human use by officials and scientists around the world.
With the so-called “third wave” of the H1N1 flu virus potentially on the brink of hitting Toronto in 2010, Toronto Public Health will announce the eventual roll-out of vaccinations for all Torontonians in the coming weeks. So we ask, what are your thoughts on Arepanrix? Will you be among the many who are vaccinated, or will you be among the others who will use alternative methods to guard against the H1N1 flu virus?
F-Toronto: State of Toronto’s Menswear
Something extraordinary occurred on October 12 2009. There seemed to be a change in the air; a sense of awakening among the men and women in the menswear industry. What was once a stagnant topic in the fashion industry, appeared to have been revitalized that day. Perhaps it was the fact that we gathered some of Toronto’s key players in the menswear industry to sit down and have a frank discussion about the state of our city’s menswear. Or maybe it was the simple notion that during the hour-long discussion, there was a mutual sense of passion for men and their style. Whatever the case, we came out of it somehow feeling that a movement had just been birthed in Toronto.
So without further adieu, we are proud to present: F-Toronto…

There’s something to be said about the “roaring twenties” and its extravagance. This was a period of economic prosperity in North America, a time when jazz blossomed and everything seemed to be feasible through modern technology. And while historically speaking, this was an era that culminated in the start of World War II, the 1920’s gave people a chance to unwind and enjoy life. It’s quite sad to say that after “The Great Crash” (the stock market crash of 1929), this mood of decadence was forever lost in time. But all that has changed for the better as we had the pleasure of witnessing the unveiling of the opulent, The Roosevelt Room.
